The game of golf has been popular for decades with names like Payne Stewart, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus. But once Tiger Woods came along the golf world was taken by storm. Woods, with his boyish charm and superb talent, drew millions of new fans to the game of golf in just a few short years on the scene. Ever since Woods took the real life game by storm the video game industry has not been the same either. There have been hundreds of new golf games produced, manufactured, and sold in the millions with Woods’ likeness on the cover and without Woods’ likeness on the cover. It does not matter if Woods is on the cover or not, the golf world has taken the video game world by storm ever since Tiger Woods waltzed onto the scene.

Golf video games, with some of the first ones being released in the late 1980s, have become so popular over the past decade or so because of the emergence of Tiger Woods and the growing popularity of the game across the globe. The games have been released for almost every gaming console on the market including PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, PlayStation Portable, the personal computer, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Wii and Nintendo 64. One of the first golf games released to the public with the likeness of Tiger Woods on the cover and with his name in the title was “Tiger Woods 99,” which was released exclusively for the personal computer by EA Sports. The first Tiger Woods game to be released for a console was the “Tiger Woods 99 PGA Tour Golf” for PlayStation by EA Sports and Electronic Arts.

So what is the appeal of a golf video game? For some people, golf video games allow them to participate in tournaments that they might not be able to be a part of in real life. Golf video games, as with all other sports video games, allow people to live vicariously through their accomplishments on the gaming console. Some golf video games allow people who play golf in real life understand what they are doing wrong on the links and improve their game before stepping foot onto the course. Golf video games also allow people who are a fan of the game but cannot play the game well the opportunity to enjoy competition with their friends or others online.

Golf video games can also be purchased for the personal computer to play at home or on the road if it is on your laptop. They can also be played for free on various gaming websites but these free games typically do not allow the gamer to play an entire 18 holes. These free internet golf games allow the gamer to work on their drive, work on their putting, work on their game in the rough or getting out of the sand trap and much more. Whether you play the game on your computer or on a gaming console, golf has become a popular sports video game these days.
